Kingfisher Bay

But first things first, let's talk about where we stayed during our incredible getaway. Nestled amidst the lush greenery and overlooking the azure waters of the Great Sandy Strait, we found our slice of heaven at the Kingfisher Bay Resort. This eco-friendly resort offers stunning accommodations and immerses you in the island's natural wonders.

And via Rainbow Beach, total travel time, including the barge ride, is from 4 to 5 hours, depending on traffic and barge schedules.
Timing: Consider visiting K'gari during the shoulder seasons (spring or autumn) when the weather is pleasant and the tourist crowds are smaller. This will allow you to have a more serene experience.

4WD Vehicle: Hire a reliable 4-wheel drive vehicle from a reputable rental company (we hired our 4WD Vehicle in Brisbane). Make sure to familiarise yourself with driving on sand and the rules specific to K'gari. Booking the 4WD vehicle in advance is also a good idea, especially during peak seasons.
Permits: Remember that you'll need a vehicle permit and a camping permit if you plan to camp on the island. These can be obtained online or through the Queensland National Parks website. Remember to carry these permits with you during your journey and register your vehicle's number plate, as there are cameras on the beach, and fines apply if you don't have a permit.

Safety First: Driving safely on the island is crucial, following all road rules and regulations. Be aware of changing tides, particularly when driving along the beach, and avoid driving at high tide. Familiarise yourself with the island's safety guidelines to ensure a safe and enjoyable trip.
Protect the Environment: K'gari is a UNESCO World Heritage site, so respecting and protecting its fragile ecosystems is essential. Follow designated tracks, responsibly dispose of waste, and avoid touching or tampering with wildlife.
