A Magical Family Christmas in Hudson, New York State
As the holiday season approached, my family (including my fur grandson) and I embarked on a charming winter adventure to Hudson, New York State. We picked Hudon as it is known for its picturesque landscapes, historic architecture, and vibrant local culture; Hudson promised to be the perfect destination for a memorable family Christmas. After we all flew in from different parts of the country (and the world for me) with anticipation, we set off on our road trip and headed from Boston to Hudson.
We were very fortunate that it snowed during our two-week stay, so we were all very excited (especially me) to have a white Christmas. Hudson welcomed us with open arms, adorned in festive decorations and a contagious holiday spirit. The town's charming Main Street was beautifully lit with twinkling lights, creating a magical atmosphere. We strolled along the cobblestone sidewalks, peering into the quaint antique stores and art galleries lined the street. Each store offered unique gifts, crafts, and locally made products, making it a delight to find unique Christmas presents for our loved ones.
Hudson's rich history was palpable as we visited the various historical sites in the area. The Olana State Historic Site, once the home of the renowned painter Frederic Edwin Church, captivated us with its stunning Persian-style architecture and panoramic views of the Hudson River Valley. We also explored the Hudson-Athens Lighthouse, perched on the river's edge, where we learned about the fascinating maritime history of the region.
Christmas trip is only complete with enjoying the winter wonderland activities. We ventured to a nearby farm, where we had an exhilarating experience of cutting down our Christmas tree. Bundled up in warm coats and scarves, we traipsed through the snow-covered fields, carefully selecting the perfect tree to bring home and decorate together.
Hudson's culinary scene offered many delightful holiday dining options. We savoured hearty meals in charming restaurants, enjoying local specialties and seasonal flavours. The town's cozy cafes served delicious hot chocolates and gingerbread treats, perfect for warming up after exploring the wintry landscapes.
We found several excellent breweries in and around Hudson; however, below were our favourites: Hudson Brewing Company: In the heart of Hudson, Hudson Brewing Company offers a warm and inviting atmosphere to enjoy its remarkable beer selection. With a focus on traditional English-style ales, their brews are crafted with passion and expertise. Sip on their flagship "Flag Day IPA," a well-balanced brew with citrusy notes, or indulge in the rich and creamy "Black Strap Stout" on a chilly winter day. Suarez Family Brewery: A short drive outside Hudson is the Suarez Family Brewery in Livingston. This small, family-owned brewery is known for its exceptional attention to detail and commitment to quality. Sample their rotating selection of finely crafted beers, including hoppy IPAs, crisp lagers, and barrel-aged creations. Be sure to try their renowned "Palatine Pils," a classic German-style pilsner that showcases the brewery's dedication to traditional brewing techniques.
My family and I discovered a charmingly remodelled farmhouse in Ghent through Air BNB that accommodated four adults and our sizable Sheepadoodle Friday. The farmhouse sat on five acres of lush woodland, providing ample space for my furry grandchild to roam and adventure with his Mimi, mother, and uncle. We enjoyed an outdoor spa for relaxation after a day of exploring, as well as a cozy fire pit for making s'mores.
Our family's white Christmas in Hudson, New York State, was a magical experience. The town's festive charm, historic allure, and abundance of winter activities made it a memorable destination for our holiday getaway. From exploring the picturesque streets to cutting down our Christmas tree and indulging in delightful culinary delights, Hudson offered everything we desired for a joyous and unforgettable Christmas celebration. We left with hearts full of gratitude, treasuring the memories we had created in this enchanting town.
