Turkey, officially the Republic of Türkiye, is a country that bridges the continents of Europe and Asia, offering a unique blend of cultures, history, and natural beauty. It is a popular tourist destination known for its beautiful beaches, bustling cities, delicious cuisine, and incredible ancient ruins.
Istanbul is Türkiye's largest city and a major tourist attraction, known for its stunning mosques, bustling markets, and rich history. Other popular destinations in Türkiye include the coastal cities of Antalya, Bodrum, and Izmir, which offer beautiful beaches and picturesque landscapes. Türkiye is also home to many ancient ruins and historical sites, including the iconic Hagia Sophia and the spectacular ancient city of Ephesus. Ephesus is an ancient city located in Turkey, which was once a thriving port town and is now an important archaeological site. Ephesus is a fascinating destination for history buffs and anyone interested in ancient civilisations. Visitors can also explore the famous Cappadocia region, known for its unique rock formations and underground cities built by early Christians to escape persecution. One of the main attractions of Cappadocia is the hot air balloon rides. Visitors can silently glide over this breathtaking region to see Cappadocia's unique rock formations, valleys, and hills during sunrise or sunset.Another notable location is Pamukkale, a famous tourist destination in Türkiye known for its beautiful hot springs and stunning travertine terraces.
The best time to visit Türkiye is between April and November when the weather is pleasant and there are plenty of activities and events to enjoy. However, if you want to enjoy warm weather and beach activities, the summer months (June-August) are ideal. Türkiye's Aegean and Mediterranean coasts are particularly popular during this time, with plenty of opportunities for swimming, sunbathing, and water sports. If you prefer cooler temperatures and fewer crowds, spring (April-May) and autumn (September-November) are great times to visit Türkiye.
Turkish cuisine is one of my favourite cuisines worldwide, famous for its delicious rich flavours that blend Mediterranean and Middle Eastern influences. The cuisine reflects the country's history, geography, and climate and incorporates a range of tastes, ingredients, and cooking techniques. Some must-try dishes include kebabs, meze (small dishes of appetisers), baklava (a sweet pastry made with layers of phyllo pastry and honey), and Turkish coffee.
Türkiye has a rich and diverse history that dates back thousands of years. As a crossroads of different cultures, the country has been influenced by the Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Ottomans, and many other civilisations. Some of the top historical ruins in Türkiye that I have enjoyed visiting are: Ephesus - Located near the modern-day city of Selçuk, Ephesus is an ancient Greek city that the Romans later occupied. Hagia Sophia - Once a Christian church, then an Islamic mosque, and now a museum, the Hagia Sophia is one of Istanbul's most iconic landmarks. Cappadocia - The otherworldly landscape of Cappadocia in central Türkiye has impressive rock formations and underground cities that were once home to early Christians. Topkapi Palace - This sprawling palace complex in Istanbul was once the seat of the Ottoman Empire. Troy - Made famous by Homer's epic poem The Iliad, Troy was an ancient city destroyed and rebuilt multiple times. Pamukkale - This natural wonder in western Türkiye is famous for its terraced pools of mineral-rich water, a popular destination for healing and relaxation since ancient times.

People witness this service in Gallipoli for many reasons, but for me, it was to honour the fallen soldiers of the past and be grateful for their sacrifice.
